Houston Itineraries
Houston is spread out, so a good plan groups things by area. Here are pace-tested itineraries for one day, two days, or a weekend.
The perfect 1 day in Houston
- Morning: Space Center Houston — do the NASA Tram Tour early.
- Lunch: head back toward the city for Tex-Mex or Viet-Cajun crawfish.
- Afternoon: the Museum District — start with the Houston Museum of Natural Science, or the always-free Menil Collection.
- Evening: dinner in Montrose or the Heights, the city's foodie neighborhoods.
2 days in Houston
Day 1 — Space & museums
Follow the one-day plan above: Space Center Houston in the morning, the Museum District in the afternoon, dinner in Montrose.
Day 2 — Parks, shopping & food
Walk or kayak Buffalo Bayou Park in the morning, then spend midday at Hermann Park and the zoo or shopping at the Galleria. In the evening, catch an Astros, Texans, or Rockets game downtown, or a show in the Theater District — and eat well (this is a great food city).
A weekend (Fri–Sun)
Arrive Friday evening for dinner and drinks in Midtown or Montrose. Use Saturday for the Day 1 highlights (space and museums). On Sunday, take a half-day day trip — Galveston's Gulf beaches (about an hour south) or the Kemah Boardwalk (about 45 minutes) — before heading out.
Tips for pacing your trip
- Group activities by area to cut down on driving — Houston is big.
- Do Space Center Houston early; the tram lines grow through the day.
- Build a free-museum afternoon around the Menil and Contemporary Arts Museum.
- Leave room for the food — it's one of the best reasons to visit.
